Uvac
The Special Nature Reserve “Uvac” is a natural asset of exceptional importance and is classified as a Category I protected area. The central part of the reserve is formed by the canyon valley of the Uvac River, whose waters have, over millennia, carved a bed into the limestone rocks, creating impressive canyon gorges with high and steep cliffs. The most recognizable feature of this landscape is the meanders, with ridges reaching up to 100 meters in height, leading many to call this area the “Serbian Colorado.” Uvac is protected primarily to preserve the griffon vulture, a rare species of vulture. This impressive bird, with a wingspan of up to 3 meters, plays a crucial role in the ecosystem as a natural cleaner, feeding exclusively on dead animals, thus preventing the spread of diseases.
Ice Cave
The Ice Cave, a hidden gem of the Uvac Canyon, is located beneath steep limestone cliffs and is one of the most beautiful caves in Serbia. It can only be reached by boat across Uvac Lake, which adds to its allure. The cave, along with its side passages, stretches over 2.5 km, and its interior is filled with fascinating cave formations. Particularly striking are the long draperies and stalactites that reach heights of up to 10 meters. Inside the cave, there is a clear lake and a stream that disappears into a crevice, creating breathtaking scenes. This cave is not only a natural spectacle but also a testament to its long formation process, involving collapsed blocks of limestone, gravel, and clay.
Viewpoint Above the Uvac Canyon
For adventure and nature lovers, the hiking tour to the viewpoint above the Uvac Canyon presents a unique challenge. The trail is 1,300 meters long and leads through untouched natural landscapes, with the reward being a panoramic view of the magnificent meanders of the Uvac River canyon valley. This viewpoint offers an unforgettable experience and the opportunity to witness firsthand the natural power and beauty of this area.
"Ravni Krš" Viewpoint
The “Ravni Krš” viewpoint is located in the heart of the meanders of the Uvac Canyon and offers a spectacular view of this natural phenomenon. The path to the viewpoint leads through a narrow forest trail, providing shade from the sun during the 15 to 20-minute ascent. Unlike other viewpoints, this climb is less demanding but equally rewarding. At the top, there is a spacious area designed for photography and enjoying the panorama.
"Molitva" Viewpoint
The “Molitva” viewpoint is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Serbia. The hiking trail to this well-maintained viewpoint with a wooden platform passes through rocky landscapes of surreal beauty, offering uninterrupted views of the Uvac River meanders. This viewpoint is not only a place to enjoy the natural beauty but also a spot for spiritual reflection and connection with nature.
Bridge on the Uvac River
At the bottom of Uvac Lake, at a depth of 60 to 70 meters, lies the preserved only remaining arch of the submerged stone bridge at Žvale. This bridge, with three slender arches, was once part of the old imperial road connecting Sarajevo and Constantinople. Although now covered by the waters of the lake, the memory of this bridge still lives on in the recollections of the older locals.
Griffon Vulture
In 1994, the number of griffon vultures at Uvac dwindled to just seven pairs, threatening their extinction. Since these birds can only lay one egg per year, the problem became critical. The main issue was the lack of food, as griffon vultures feed exclusively on animal carcasses, and with fewer livestock during that period, their numbers declined. Thanks to the efforts of local residents and nature enthusiasts, feeding stations were organized for the birds, and today over 700 griffon vultures live in this area. These magnificent birds are now a symbol of nature conservation and a testament to the successful work in protecting endangered species.
Ušac Cave System
The Ušac Cave System is the largest and most complex cave system in Serbia, located in the Uvac River Canyon. It consists of numerous caves ranging from small overhangs to impressive underground halls. This system represents a unique speleological value and is one of the key natural resources of the Uvac Reserve, attracting researchers and speleology enthusiasts from around the world.
Jerina's Town – Village Družiniće
At the point where the Uvac River forms large meanders, now submerged under the waters of the artificial Sjenica Lake, lies the site known as Jerina’s Town. This historical site, located in the village of Družiniće, is associated with legends of the powerful Byzantine Empress Jerina and represents a place of great cultural and historical significance.
Uvac Lake (Sjenica Lake)
Uvac Lake, also known as Sjenica Lake, is an artificial lake that winds through the meanders once shaped by the Uvac River. The lake was created by the construction of the highest earth dam in Serbia, standing at 110 meters tall, which enabled the formation of a water reservoir with a capacity of 212 million cubic meters. This water powers a hydroelectric plant with a capacity of 36 MW, generating 70 million kWh of electricity annually. The lake, with its unique landscape aesthetics, is an important ecological and energy resource for Serbia.
